词根:sen = old(老的;年长的)

  词根sen 来源于拉丁语 senex,可以追溯到原始印欧语根*sen-。有异形同义词根:-vet- / -geronto- 老,分别来源于拉丁语 vetus 和希腊语。senate (参议院,上议院)起源于古罗马的元老院,元老院在拉丁语中为senatus,字面意思类似于“老人班子”。在古罗马,只有长者才被认为是真正的贤哲,才有权威,他们是参议院的重要组成部分;senior 除了有 “年长的,年长者” 的意思外,还可以指 “大学四年级的学生”,大四学生相对于freshman (大一学生)而言,确实有 “老油条”的感觉。我们称“先生”叫sir,也来源于此,很明显,在英语单词里sir就体现出了一种对长者的尊敬。
