last straw：使人无法承受的最后一击

骆驼（camel）素以耐力著称，它可以多天不吃不喝，驮着重物在一望无垠的沙漠中行走。但凡是皆有限度，骆驼的负载能力亦然。据说，最强壮的骆驼的最大负载量约为1200磅，一旦超过了极限，骆驼就会承受不了，英语谚语It is the last straw that breaks the camel's back. (最后一根稻草压断了骆驼的脊背)形象地说明了这个道理。该谚语可能系英国作家狄更斯（Charles Dickens）所创，他在《董贝父子》（Dombey and Son）中写了as the last straw breaks the laden camel's back 这样的语句。但狄更斯这种说法来自一个更为古老的谚语 It is the last feather that breaks the horse's back.(最后一根羽毛压断马的脊背)。后来人们往往将前一个谚语缩短为straw that breaks the camel's back 或 the last straw, 用以喻指一系列重压、打击之外使人无法承受的最后一击或最终导致失败（或垮台）的因素。
