It comes via Latin prosōdia from Greek prosōidíā, which originally meant ‘song with an instrumental accompaniment’. This was a compound formed from prós ‘in addition to’ and ōidé ‘song’ (source of English ode [16] and also of parody [16], rhapsody, and probably tragedy).
