banlieue n.f. 郊区，市郊: 在中世纪，每当封建领主组建军队参战时，其附庸都要承担为其出征的义务。届时，领主会下达一道动员令（ban），将其所有的附庸都召集起来。当时的法律规定，领主所住城市方圆一古里（lieue，约合4公里）之内的区域都属于该领主的地盘，在这片区域内，领主所下达的动员令同样有效。因此，人们就将这片区域称作“banlieue”。
17世纪时，“banlieue”的词义发生了改变。从此，人们开始用它来指称大城市周边的村镇和田野。
