在英语里,cafe 这个词指的是那种比较小、一般很随意的餐馆。通常店里的桌子都不大,有时还会在门外摆几张餐桌。它既可以带着重音符号,写成 café;也可以不带,写作 cafe。

“cafe”源于法语单词 coffee,不过它跟其他语言中一些与咖啡有关的单词也很像。所以通常 cafe 里都是供应咖啡的,而只卖咖啡(不卖其他吃的)的地方,通常被称为 coffee shop。

另外还要注意的是,有一个与之类似的单词 cafeteria 比较容易混淆。一般的 cafeteria 是那种只为特定的一群人服务的餐厅,通常开在学校或者公司里的才叫 cafeteria,它们只面向在那里工作或者学习的人开放。
