最初名叫Shikaakwa，来自当地爱荷华-伊利诺伊-印第安按-俄亥俄区域各部落（主要是福克斯部、迈阿密部和萨乌克部等等）所使用的阿尔冈琴语，指的是美国中西部和加拿大东部特有的一种长得像大葱的植物。后来，法国探险家罗伯特·德·拉塞尔骑士根据读音将这里改写为Checagou，再后来转写为Chicago。由于词源是开头为Shi，因此Chicago的正确发音应该是Shi（接近“施”）-cago而不是Chi（“吃”或者“七”）-cago。
