词根：cosm = 秩序, 宇宙, 装饰
来源于希腊语 cosmos 次序 / 和谐，在进入英语后，又引申为“世界”，且占据了主要的用途。现在我们在英语中见到的派生词，大部分是基于该词根的引申义。另外，由词根 -cosm- 加上一些后缀还可以合成的方式构成词汇，如：cosmos 宇宙、cosmology 宇宙论。
词根cosm 有异形同义词根：-orn- 装饰，如：ornate 华丽的 / 装饰的 /( 文体 ) 绚丽的；-universe- 宇宙，后者为它对应的拉丁语词根，来源于拉丁语 universum，如：universal 普通的 / 通用的。
此外，词根cosm 除了“宇宙，秩序”含义之外，还有“ornament（装饰）”的意思，因此cosmetics 表示“化妆品”，化妆品的功效在于美容皮肤，“使人的脸部和谐、光润”。和cosmos 相对应的是chaos,受古希腊神话中混沌之神Chaos（卡厄斯）的影响。chaos在英文里的意思是a state of extreme confusion and disorder,现在，我们经常用chaos 来描述那种复杂无序的状态。古希腊人想象，在世界之初，宇宙一片混沌,物质都没有固定的形状,天地浑然一体,他们把这种混乱的状况称之为chaos。于此同时,他们想象出了一个神,名字就叫“Choas”。与此同时，他们想象出了一个神，名字就叫“Chaos”，翻译成中文就是“卡厄斯”，他就是原始的天神，一般称为混沌之神。
