sol 这个词根有的书上如刘毅字典,刘洪波英文字根词源精讲等上面说来自拉丁语的sol(=sun),有的书如赢在单词上面说sol 来自拉丁语的solari,但不管哪种说法，他们的意思都表示 sun（太阳），古人认为太阳是宇宙中心神圣无比是唯一的，所以，sol又有与异源形根表示“单独”的sol 词根相同的意思，这样，sol 即可表示“太阳”，又有“单独，唯一”的意思，但请注意二者来源不同，sol 表示“单独，唯一”来源于拉丁语的solus。此外，注意不要将其与意为 firm/whole 的来自拉丁语的solid 相混淆。
