来源于拉丁语domus（注意：大多数书上都认为dom来源于拉丁语的domus,但有的书上说dom来源于拉丁语domare。）可以追溯到原始印欧语根*dem-,*dom-，这个词有两层含义：一是相当于“house（房屋，家）”；二是 “the owner of the house，（家的主人）”。从第二层又引出“统治”的意思。第二层的意思就是词根dom的同形异源词根dom。词根dom还可以当做后缀，作为后缀-dom时，表示“状态”。
